The representation of the human body is a predominant theme throught the history of art practically in every culture.
The body is a node that connects aesthetic, emotion, beauty, spirituality, rationalism, fear and identity; a symbolic code that teaches us how to interpret humanity’s relationship with its natural, religious, social and political environment. It is a canvas which expresses individual identity and ethnic belonging, the object and subject of carnal and commercial desire, illusions of happiness and helplessness.
The exhibition From Head to Toe, Human Images in the Focus of the Würth Collection explores some of these themes through the representation of the human figure over the last 150 years. The exhibition features almost 100 artists and more than 140 works dating from 1881 to the present day. It depicts the development of the History of Contemporary Art practically in every stage of artistic manifestation: from the academic Costumbrismo of the late 19th century to Contemporary Art, including the Classical Avant-Garde, Conceptual Art, Pop Art, Neo-Expressionism and Video Art.
The exhibition curatorial layout does not set out to be a historical journey through the development of contemporary art, but rather a consideration of representations of the human body, addressing some of the aesthetic, personal and social problems that human figuration illustrates. From Head to Toe features works by some of the most significant artists in contemporary art from the late 19th century to the present day as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Jean Arp, Fernando Botero, Gilbert & George, Alex Katz, Anselm Kiefer, Gustav Klimt, Aurélie Nemours, Jaume Plensa, Tony Oursler or Andy Warhol. Through these works, we can take a look at the human body as a place where identity resides, where beauty and ugliness, desire and violence, the pure and the impure, the spiritual and the carnal, the liquid, the haptic, the visceral, the divine and the sublime, all converge.
